Oregon Winter Steelhead
Oregon is steelhead country. It's that simple. With the onset of
Oregon's winter rain, dozens of great rivers draining the west slope of
the Coast Range swell, rising and falling with each storm. Each rain
between late November and the end of March brings fresh pulses of
winter steelhead into every river on Oregon's Coast. Some are justly
famous, the Umpqua and Rogue receive great runs of these sea-run
rainbows. Others fly under the radar. The Alsea, Siuslaw, Lake Creek,
the Siletz and many others receive big, healthy runs of native bruisers
and hatchery fish. Still other streams are completely off the map but
from the famous to the obsure, they all have one thing in common:
great winter fishing!
Winter Steelhead
The steelhead is the premiere gamefish in North America and is
considered second only to the Atlantic Salmon in the pantheon of great
sportfish. Steelhead are anadramous rainbow trout. Born in Oregon's
coastal rivers they rear for two years before entering the Pacific. There
they grow big, strong and fast averaging six to ten pounds with fish to
well over twenty. We intercept steelhead as they return to their natal
streams to spawn. Steelhead can leap waterfalls of eight feet and
surge through rapids that appear impassable. Imagine being
connected to one of these incredible fish: it's an experience you will
never forget.
Steelhead are often called the fish of 1000 casts but that is a misnomer.
The most difficult part in catching steelhead is finding them in the first
place. Once located, steelhead will eat a variety of flies, baits and
hardware. That's where we come in . . . putting you on fish. The
catching part, we leave that to you!

Winter Steelhead, One Day Float
All of our guided trips utilize the Mckenize river driftboat. These
boats are nimble and responsive allowing anglers to effectively fish
miles of river in a single day. Full day winter steelhead trips launch
around 9:00 am and take out is at dark. If you want to fish dark to
dark, let us know! Lunch is provided and we take pride in our food.
Despite the picture, winter steelheading conditions are generally mild
in Oregon. Still, be prepared with foul weather. Mid-forties and
drizzling is typical. Expert or beginner, from catching hatchery fish to
chasing native steelhead, we have the perfect winter steelheading
adventure for you!
